Dragged Into the Woods

When you think of the word cryptid, what do you picture? At least in the minds of most people, sasquatch is the first one. Sasquatch or Big Foot is a classic example of cryptids. It is the original sauce in a plethora of new cryptid flavors. Sasquatch also makes up one of the most well known and most sighted cryptids to date. And although many people have claimed to have seen sasquatch, very few people can say that they have interacted with sasquatch. And the main character of today’s story has them all beat. So, sit back and relax as we open todays Cryptid File.

British Columbia, 1924

Albert Ostman had been working too long as a logger and a prospector. He had finally earned enough of a break to get out into the mountains by himself for some camping and relaxation. It had been a few successful days enjoying the scenery of the Canadian mountains. Albert had found a lovely camp site and was beginning to settle in. He even was able to do some prospecting and hunting. All was happening as it should.

Until one early morning Albert had noticed that some things around his camp site had been disturbed. Albert was not phased; he was well acquainted with animal encounters as the professional woodsmen he was. He cleaned up camp and went through another normal day. The next morning, more things had been moved. He even noted that his pack had been completely emptied by something.

After a few nights of this Albert had had enough. He decided to stay up and find out what kind of creature was rummaging through his belongings. He slept fully clothed with his shoes and rifle alongside him in the sleeping bag. The nighttime came and Alberts exhaustion got the better of him. He had fallen asleep.

Suddenly, Albert was shaken from his sleep as he felt himself being lifted into the air. Something had grabbed the sleeping bag and began dragging it away from camp with Albert inside. At first Albert was unsure of what was happening, still groggy from his slumber. Slowly he realized he had been hoisted onto the back of a large animal. He could feel that it was walking very quickly up a very steep slope. He reached for his belt knife but realized he could not get to it. It was pinned against the shoulder of his massive captor.

After over an hour the beast still scrambled onward. He could hear it panting with the effort and even heard it cough a few times. Chillingly the thought came to Albert’s mind. This must be a sasquatch.

Several hours had passed now. He was dragged at times and hoisted over the sasquatch’s shoulder at other times. Up and down, they went over several mountain slopes. Until finally the evidently reached their stopping point and he was dropped roughly. He could hear the contents of his pack being rummaged through and another terrifying sound. The mumbled grunting language of several other sasquatches.

Poking his head out of his sleeping bag, Albert looked around. It was still quite dark. His legs had fallen asleep, and he tried to move incrementally to get the blood flowing again. He slipped on his shoes as he listened to the continuing garbled talk of at least four large animals that stood around him on all sides. Eventually Albert summoned the courage to stand and draw his rifle which was still inside his sleeping bag. He yelled at the beasts what they wanted with him, but his question was met with only more grunting from the hairy beings, of which he could see clearly with the dawn of a new day.

There was one massive sasquatch and another large sasquatch and two very small sasquatch. Albert described them as completely covered in hair and with no clothes. As the sun rose higher in the sky, he could see their expressions clearly now and could tell the two larger ones were obviously the parents a male and a female. The two little ones also resembled their parents as a male and a female. He noted that the young ones seemed frightened, and the large female seemed to be disapproving of the strange visitor. The Largest sasquatch, obviously the father, looked proud and was excitedly waving his arms and gesturing to the family about Albert. Suddenly they all wandered away a few paces to discuss the situation.

Albert took this opportunity to look around and try to figure out where he was. He found himself in a valley surrounded by tall mountains. He had time to inspect his supplies and make a plan to escape. After several days of eating his pack rations and being watched constantly by the sasquatch family he began to look for any chance of escape.

Eventually the large old male became interested in Alberts can of snuff. Albert happily obliged thinking he had found a way of escape. The male gulped down the snuff and within a short amount of time did appear to be quite sick. Taking advantage of the distraction Albert ran. The little boy squealed to his mother who gave chase as Albert neared the end of the valley. He fired a warning shot over her head, and she ran away scared of the rifle. After a long day of running and trying to orient himself, Albert finally found some loggers who rescued him and brought him back to safety.

My Biologist Opinion

This story is one of the most in depth and detailed accounts of sasquatch and sasquatch behavior that we have. I strongly encourage everyone to go read the account from Albert Ostman himself. It can be found online with ease. In it he describes many details that make me think of some of the social behaviors of other kinds of large apes. Certain large apes will live in family groups with a social hierarchy and a special kind of language that distinguishes their tribe from other tribes. All these details and more are quite fascinating and convincing.

The possibility of a sasquatch existing today is in my mind higher than most other cryptids I have heard about. I find it totally plausible that sasquatch is living in our woodlands and is able to hide from more obvious exposure to humans. If it is as intelligent as it’s lower ranked apes or more so, then it would have the ability to remain very well hidden. All Hominids are very intelligent after all.

The question has to be asked, is sasquatch dangerous? I find that any wild animal is dangerous if it is put in a distressing situation. That being said, I would not recommend the capture of this kind of cryptid. If you do capture it, it better be very sedated or dead. Which of course is a huge loss to any intelligence studies we would want to know about. Bear spray works quite well on bears, so bear spray may have some effect on sasquatch, but I wouldn’t bet your life on it. A large enough net or caliber of rifle could be the trick. But like I said, death is a loss of future studies. If it has a language, maybe we could learn more about it by trying to communicate with it.
